Bleaching Hair at Home vs. Getting Highlights at the Salon
A lot of people want lighter hair, and a box of bleach looks cheap and quick. But bleach is strong, and it is hard to fix when it goes wrong. Here is what to know before you try it.
What can go wrong at home
Uneven color. Hair takes bleach at different speeds, so you can end up with dark roots and bright ends.
Brassy or orange hair. Bleach lifts color in steps. Stop too soon and you may get a yellow or orange tint.
Dry, damaged hair. Bleach can leave hair rough, dry, and easy to break.
Scalp irritation. Bleach can sting or burn the skin if it sits too close to the scalp.
What a stylist does differently
A stylist looks at your hair first. They check your natural color, how thick your hair is, and whether it was colored before. Then they pick the right product and decide how long to leave it on. They place the color on purpose, so it looks soft and even. At the end, a gloss or toner can fix any tint you don’t like.
