Balayage vs. Highlights: What’s the Difference?
Both balayage and highlights make hair lighter and brighter. But they are done in different ways, and they look different. Here is how to pick.
How they are done
Highlights: The stylist places thin pieces of hair in foil and adds color. The result is clear and even.
Balayage: The stylist paints the color on by hand. The word comes from a French word that means to sweep.
How they look
Highlights look bold and bright. You can see the lighter pieces against your natural color.
Balayage looks soft and natural, like hair that was lightened by the sun.
How they grow out
Balayage is usually lower maintenance. Since the color blends toward the roots, you don’t get a hard line as it grows. Highlights often need touch-ups sooner to keep them looking sharp.
